Kit's
saying plurals now! Kitties ("teetees") and "bears"
particularly. He's also been putting final consonants on some
words for a week or so. He's been practicing "mouse"
a lot the last couple of days (for the mouse in "Goodnight
Moon" and Mysti's play mouse) although it's still sounding
like "moushe". Toast is "tosh", juice is "joosh",
milk is "milp", and cheese is "tzeese". (Uncle
Mark is still "Mar".)
He's
also been putting words together for a while... "Nigh-nigh....
Moon", "walk, walk, walk, neeeiiiighh! appo" (reporting
to Mama on the walk he and Di had just taken, down the road to
feed apples and carrots to the horses).

He's
been making the kissing sound for a couple of weeks now; at first
just to send a kiss across the room, then when actually giving a
kiss, and now this morning he made the kissing sound while holding
a bunny's and a bear's faces together. |

Two
firsts today: he picked up the phone on my desk (which I've unplugged
from the wall so we don't have calls to Australia on our phone
bill!) and said, "Yeh-yo". Such a clever boy. :-) He's
been saying bye-bye for a while, although not always before
he hangs up, but this is the first time I've heard him say
hello. (A comment on the usual chaos around here, he also says,
'uh-oh!' when he hears the phone ring. Wonder where he picked
that up?)
Also,
today is his first dentist appointment. Toddlers are supposed
to have a dentist visit sometime after 12 months, and we're finally
getting around to it. I suppose we'll learn how to properly brush
his teeth... he loves 'brushing' them, which consists of chewing
on the bristles and trying to get away from us so he can run around
with the brush in his mouth. Perhaps they have a little dentist's
chair we can seat-belt him into for toothbrush sessions? ;-)
And
I know I should be posting more pictures... I will get to that!
But I have to work on the computer upstairs to select pics and
make them the right sizes, etc., and yesterday's daycare time
went to putting away all the Christmas stuff that was all over
the guest room, including the bed, since Uncle Mark is coming
tonight for a couple of days. (Kit, say, "Uncle Mark!")

An
example of classic gender differences: today Eva spoke her first
sentence (while playing peek-a-boo, "Mommy, where's Daddy?")
and Kit today began the baby-language conversations, long phrases
in some unknown language that sound very serious and important...
and ADORABLE. I hope we manage to record one of Kit's speeches
before he moves on to real sentences! Eva's been talking like
that for several weeks -- since before Christmas, if I remember
right (she's just 2 weeks older). On
the other hand, she doesn't try to climb up on everything she
can reach. She still needs help getting up onto the sofa, for
example, and Kit is up there all the time... unfortunately, since
he turns on and off the fan & light from there and also occasionally
takes a header over the sofa arm onto the floor.

18-month
well-baby. appt. today: 25 lbs 4 oz. and 31 inches
tall. He had 2 shots which he seemed to be expecting; he didn't
want to come into the exam room and screamed when he was touched
by either the nurse or his Nurse Practitioner -- even just to
weigh and measure him, or look in his ears. He kept saying 'bye'
and waving at them; telling them to go away! We gave him tylenol
a while before it was time for shots and although he yelled at
both of them, he didn't cry afterwards for more than a minute.
He's
got a top&bottom set of molars on the right and a top molar
on the left, with its matching bottom one just about ready to
pop through the gum. (He actually let the NP look in his mouth
-- probably helped that he was yelling and therefore had his mouth
open. ;-) I knew he had the right-hand set, since he started chewing
this week, on that side only, but didn't know the status of the
other side since he won't let us look very often.

This
has been a busy week! The first Music
Together class of the new term was Tuesday afternoon, Kit's
first day at daycare was Wednesday, the last swimming
class of the SwimSafe Fundamentals fall/winter term was Thursday
afternoon, and the first gym class of the Jan/Feb term was this
morning (actually it started last week, but Kit decided to take
a nap right before we needed to leave so we missed it.)
We're
going to take a break from swimming for a while, although Cory
and I will probably take Eva and Kit swimming at a local pool
at least once a month, just to keep them from forgetting what
they know. So after this week, it'll just be music on Tuesdays,
daycare on Wednesdays, and gym on Fridays.

This
entry is from Di: Kit and I took a long walk
through the fog this morning. He yelled “Down” a lot because,
of course, he can walk himself now, you know, and he doesn’t need
to be carried on my back! (Oh, the ignominy!) But I distracted
him with other things and we made it back home in time for breakfast.
But
yesterday was warm, and we went out at lunch time. He pounded
all over the yard – happy to be in his new sneakers and able to
slide down his slide and poke at dirt piles. Deliciously warm
for January.

We
visited the daycare Eva goes to on Wednesdays, run by Coreena and
Dale Ross, and Kit seemed to be quite comfortable there. He played
with the toys, petted the dog - a sweet-tempered sheltie, and even
let Dale carry him around a bit. We'll start taking him there next
week, from about 11 to 4 on Wednesdays, so Shell can have an afternoon
a week to get things done are hard to do with him around. Like catching
up our bookkeeping and organizing the house :-( and working on sewing
projects! :-) |

Trevor's
birthday party was this afternoon -- he's 2! Alan and Arlene had
a bunch of people over, about 6 moms and 10 kids, so it was a noisy,
messy party and a lot of fun. Kit played with several of the younger
ones, including Eva of course, and he liked the birthday cake a
LOT. :-) |

Kit
finally let me see in his mouth tonight and the 4 molars he's
been teething FOREVER are finally showing up. Not all the way
in by any means, but the 'points' have at least all popped out
on at least 2 of them. Soon he'll be able to eat nuts and hard
crackers and other non-gummable stuff that we still haven't been
giving him, since he hasn't been able to chew 'em up and could
choke. He'll be happy... he pouts when we're eating stuff he can't
have. :-)
Di's
in San Diego for 4 days - she'll be home Thursday night but Kit's
missing her already. He keeps asking for Di-Di. :( And he's just
not sleepy at all tonight... he's still going strong at 9:15pm,
climbing on a drawer of my desk to reach the desktop and messing
with my papers... and trying to reach the calculator, etc. I don't
know what to do except let him run around until he gets sleepy
- sometime before midnight, I hope!! - and try to keep him from
dismantling everything until then. Oh well, at least he's in a
good mood. :)

This
entry is from Di: He's busy absorbing every word
we say, practicing "no" and putting on tantrums. :-) Last night
we went to Victorian Christmas, a winter festival put on by our
town, with craft booths, singing, musicians and food. He greatly
enjoyed himself (at least, we think he did -- he was pretty bundled
up against the cold and all we could see of him were his eyeballs).
Especially liked the bagpiper and drummers and seeing the horses
pulling carriages. |

Signed
Kit up for the gym classes in Dec - just 3 Fridays. He's really
enjoying all the activities. Doesn't seem to be too interested in
the other kids his age, except for Eva, altho he likes the teachers
and loves to watch the group of older kids. |

He's
talking well enough that we can figure out what he's saying most
of the time. I have to admit that context helps a LOT and sign
language (ASL baby talk!) clarifies some 'words'. For example,
"doe" can mean donut, down, go, etc., "jzhoo" means shoe and juice,
and "bree" means broom, please, and who knows what else. But dog
(and woof-woof), kitty (and mrow), mom-mom (what he calls me),
di-di (what he calls Di), baby, hi, bye-bye, duck, and a few others
are quite clear. He calls his friend Eva, who's 2 weeks older
and his at-least-weekly playmate, "Va" or "Va-va" and we've all
picked it up and call her Va-va sometimes now.
I was worried his curls would be gone forever after his haircut
on Oct. 24, but they've already come back. So I guess he really
has wavy-curly hair.

We
spent Thanksgiving in Arizona with Di's whole clan...had a great
time w/her brothers and their families and her mom. Took a day and
a half each way so we could stop and enjoy little breaks at parks
and rest stops with Kit, so it was a mini-vacation as well. |

Today
was Lauren and Nicole Breza's 2nd birthday party and adoption day
party, rolled into one! They got tons of cool stuff... we gave them
a tent that Kit's Uncle Mark spent a lot of time seeking out (we
had him get 2 -- Santa's giving one to Kit this Christmas!) It's
one Eva has had for quite a while and the kids love to play in it.
We also gave them bead purses - one fuschia and one purple - which
seemed to be hits. :-) Very good food and great people to visit
with too, as always at the Brezas' parties. |

Stopped
at the doctor's office to get Kit's flu shot booster. |

We
checked out the Rising
Starz gym class that Cory's been taking Eva to and Kit had a
good time -- and a LOT of exercise. (So did mama, running after
him!) Then he fell asleep on the way home so I let him sleep in
the carseat (in the garage, with the doors open to the kitchen)
but he still only napped about 1/2 hr. He's up now and wandering
around humming "baa baa black sheep" incessantly except when he
sees me and wants to be held. I gave him Tylenol again since he
was so frantic and holding his cheek when he woke up. That stopped
the crying but he's still pretty clingy. And he has NO interest
in food. Must be teething. |

I
think Kit gets overwhelmed by all the people at music class. There
are usually only about 7 or 8 kids, altho there can be as many as
a dozen at one time, plus all the moms. It seems to be a huge number
to watch and too many for him to find one to interact with, whereas
he has no trouble with just Eva or Trevor, or even both of them
at once. |

31, 2003 |
We
held a Halloween party at dinnertime (potluck) for Kit, Eva, and
Trevor (22 months) and the 3 sets of parents. Eva was a kitty-cat,
Trevor was a pirate, and Kit was a cow. The kids played together
quite well and the adults feasted quite well. :-) |

Had
his first haircut today and I was afraid we'd lose all the curls
for good. It's still dark blonde/very light brown, with very blonde
highlights. There's just a hint of red in the sunlight still, and
his eyes are still an amazing shade of BLUE. |

Kit's
15-month well-baby appt. was today. He's 23 lbs 6 oz and
29.75 inches. And had shots of course, poor baby, including
his first flu shot.
:-( He'll need a booster in 1 month. |

Sometime
this week, Kit's other 2 bottom teeth came in... just in time so
we didn't have to ask about it at his 15-month appt! |

18, 2003 |
He
still hasn't gotten any molars... or even the rest of the bottom
front teeth. Just has the 6 teeth in front (4 top, 2 bottom) that
all came in a rush months ago, He's eating just fine without them
though... loves toast with jam or cinnamon sugar, or raisin toast
with just butter in the mornings with his baby-oatmeal-and-fruit
cereal, banana chunks, grapes (cut up), bites of apple, cantaloupe,
little chunks of cheese with cheerios or crackers, fruit yogurt,
noodles from our spaghetti or Thai noodle dish, ice cream, cookies,
cake... and little tastes of whatever we're eating. Except NO
veggies! Well, occasionally he'll eat a bit, but mostly this month
he's on strike against them. ;-)
He's
starting to talk a little more now, too. He's making a difference
now occasionally between 'mom-mom' (Shell) and 'mommy' (Di), although
he also says 'Di-Di' for Di a lot of the time. He says 'baby'
and 'buh-y' (bunny without the n) for his stuffed animals, I can't
spell how he says kitty... sort of a cross between a k and a g
for both the k and t's... gkigki... hmm, I guess we'll have to
try to tape that one! He says moo when you prompt him or point
to a cow picture, and he can mimic the trumpet-sound of an elephant
(waving his arm up, the way Di does, to be the trunk!).
According
to the scale at the gym where his swimming class is this semester,
he weighs about 22 lbs now. I'd love to measure him (using my
sewing tape measure) but he is so wiggly when you lay him down
that I need to remember to try when Di's available to help hold
him down! It's quite a battle sometimes now just to get his diaper
changed or his clothes on.

Shell
and Kit have Music
Together class on Tuesday afternoons now. We started today.
We've signed up for a 10-wk 'course' that's for infants up to 4-yr
olds. There are about 12 parents in the class (one dad comes with
his 2 kids) and 1 or 2 kids each, so it's quite a roomful! The kids
mostly bounce around during the songs and play with the various
instruments there. I'm not sure we'll continue after this term,
since I don't see that we're doing anything we don't already do
at home, but we'll see how he likes it. I'm thinking that in the
winter when it's rainy out it might be more fun (and wear him out
better! ;-) to go to the baby classes at a children's gym. Cory's
checked that out with Eva already and said she thinks it would be
perfect for Kit, but I don't want to do 3 'class' things a week
with him... I think 2 is PLENTY at this age! Meaning me, of course.

Kit and Shell have been back home for 4 days now and are getting
into the home-routine again. Kit's SOOO excited to have Di 'back'
that he wakes up wanting her to play, yells for her at the bottom
of the stairs frequently during the day (which interrupts her train
of thought even if she doesn't come out of her office to talk to
him), and wants her FULL attention every evening. Tuesday was swimming
class - the first one in 4 weeks, but he didn't seem to have forgotten
anything. And he's really practicing walking a lot now and seems
to want to walk instead of crawl most of the time. |

HE TOOK HIS FIRST STEPS!!!! We stopped at Di's brother &
sister-in-law's in Fremont for lunch on the way home from Santa
Cruz, and he took his first steps for Di and Uncle Mark while Auntie
Karen and Shell were in another room. :-( But he was perfectly willing
to demonstrate it again for us and seemed quite pleased. |

Still
not walking yet. But we think it'll be soon now... he's started
to stand by himself (not holding onto anything) when he has a really
interesting toy or something in his hand and he wants to "study"
it with both hands. He'll stay standing like that for several seconds
(5 or 10) before plopping down on his bottom. |

Birthday
cards and gifts continue to arrive for Kit from family and friends.
He has so many fascinating new toys that we cleared out some of
the old and now boring ones to make room! He now has 2 walking-toys
-- one that is either a tricycle with basket or a walking cart,
depending on how the seat is arranged, and one is a sit-on-or-push
Thomas the Engine that has buttons to push for various train-related
sounds and songs. He adores them and they're constantly being found
in random rooms, abandoned where he ran into a wall or furniture
and couldn't get them re-directed. They're much safer for him to
push than ride on at this point, since he's so short that his feet
don't touch the ground on either side. He tends to lean to one side
or the other and fall off while being pushed down the hall. Just
needs a couple more inches! |

We
flew to San Diego for a friend's birthday party, and stayed with
Kit's 'Auntie Boo' and 'Auntie' Paula. Had a wonderful time and
packed a lot into 3 days. Friday afternoon we went to a park with
Kit, Saturday Shell went to a salon to have her nails done while
Di, Kit, Boo, and Paula went shopping for birthday cards, and we
stopped by another friend's on the way to the party which was at
6pm. Sunday we picked up sandwiches at a deli and went to the beach
- Kit's first ocean beach experience. He played in the sand under
a beach umbrella, in the surf, ate, napped in the stroller, and
played some more. Boo and Di rented 2 kayaks and the adults took
turns kayaking and baby-watching. We headed home finally to clean
up and pack, and still had time to go to dinner with Boo and Paula
before they dropped us off at the airport about 7:30pm. The flight
was packed, so we had Kit on our laps the entire time. Fortunately,
he slept most of it, and still slept a lot of the drive home from
Sacramento. We got in about 1:30am... yaaaawwwwn. |

Kit's
12-month Doctor appt was today. He's 28 1/2 inches tall and
weighs 21lbs 6oz. He's still a little guy. :-) (Di was relieved
to hear that he will probably only weigh 25-26 lbs at 2 years, since
she'll be carrying him on her back on our trek across England sometime
next summer!) Two shots today too, and one of them was in his arm.
That one Shell wasn't prepared for -- I wasn't holding his leg,
since the shot wasn't going to be in it, and he kicked the nurse
just as the needle hit him. It stuck him but bounced off, and she
had to do it again... and he has a little bruise from it. Poor baby
really cried after that one. |

He's
one year old today! This evening was Kit's usual swimming lesson
(it's why we had his birthday party yesterday) so Shell baked
a sheet cake to take in to share with all the other children,
parents, and the teacher.
